Southeast Marine Services :: Alternators :: Balmar

Small and large case Balmar alternators are constructed expressly for rugged marine use - incorporating extra tough materials for maximum resistance to salt and corrosion. White powdercoating ensures that your alternator will remain in "ship shape" long after it's installed in your engine room.

No matter what your charging application, there's a Balmar alternator that's just the right size and amperage to get the job done right. Small-case alternators for direct OEM replacement - to extra large alternators - provide amperage outputs ranging from 50 amps to a whopping charging power in excess of 310 amps.

The open ocean is no place for charging failure.

That’s why Whitbread racers, world cruisers, top boatbuilders and the U.S. Coast Guard all look to Balmar premium marine alternators for high-output performance and solid reliability. Balmar marine alternators are built to provide optimum charging capacity at lower rpm’s, so you’ll enjoy increased economy, shorter charging cycles and increased battery life. How do I choose the right alternator for my charging system?

Most marine engines, whether diesel or gasoline powered, utilize one of three types of mounts for alternator attachment:
1) 1" Motorola®-style mount, 2) 2" Delco®-style mount, and 3) Import (Hitachi®) style saddle mount with approximately 3" between mounting legs.

Many mounting configurations for common engine types can be found in our engine mounting guide.

Should I use a small-case or a large-case alternator?

For small case alternators the Six or Seven Series are ideal for direct OEM replacement on most small to medium horsepower marine diesel and/or gasoline engines. These high-output models are a terrific source of improved charging power over standard alternators.

What should I do if my energy load is larger than average?

In cases where the added demands of air conditioning, refrigeration and other power hungry AC and DC loads are commonplace, our high-capacity, 94 and 95 Series alternators can produce quantities of charging power. These higher-output alternators provide the increased amperage capacity needed to satisfy the demands of serious sail and power cruisers.

My system includes a large inverter and substantial battery capacity.

When system loads include a substantial number of large, deep-cycle batteries, inverter, larger refrigeration or air conditioning systems, and other high-demand components, you may want to consider the benefits of Balmar 97 and 98 Series Alternators. These powerful models provide the additional heft and extraordinary amperage necessary to handle the most demanding system structure. Many models feature brushless construction for long-lasting dependability.

What Alternator fits my engine?

The chart below is not all inclusive and is intended for general information only. To verify that the alternator you have chosen is the correct model for your engine and application, call Larry or Fred at 800-487-0610

larger diesel engines requiring a J-180 style mounting, These alternators can also be used with our 5276 off engine mounting bracket
Some engine manufacturers make brackets to allow easy mounting of J-180 styles
95-Series 4” Dual Ft.( J180) Detroit, Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deere, Off-engine mount
97-Series 4” Dual Ft.( J180) Detroit, Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deere, Off-engine mount
98-Series 4” Dual Ft.( J180) Detroit, Cummins, Caterpillar, John Deere, Off-engine mount
PLEASE NOTE: This chart is intended as a general reference, and may not be representative of all engine models. The ONLY way
to ensure proper installation is to determine your alternator’s mounting style and find the most suitable replacement alternator
model. Mounting compatibility IS NOT guaranteed. Some modifications may be required to ensure proper operation.
